About

Gamut is a public resource maintained by Joel Honeywell, dedicated to widening access to opportunities across the film and television industry.

Why this database exists

Built from a real list

The database at the heart of Gamut began life as a spreadsheet — a working list of Black and global majority crew kept because productions kept saying they couldn’t find us. The crew were there all along. What was missing was a single place where they could be found.

That list became Hue List in 2020, and Hue List has grown into Gamut: a proper directory where crew manage their own profiles and productions can reach them directly. Some inherited listings are historic and not yet claimed by the crew member they describe; they stay listed so that person can claim, update or remove them.

Crewing has long run on word of mouth, group chats and who-you-know. That isn’t merit — it’s habit, and it keeps the same circles closed. Gamut fills an information gap, not a quota.

This is not tokenism. Gamut is not a box to tick or a quota to meet — it is a means of bridging a gap: the distance between skilled crew who have always been ready to work and the productions that have simply never been shown their names. The list doesn’t lower any bar; it removes the excuse that the talent couldn’t be found.

From Hue List to Gamut

If you were on Hue List

Thank you. Hue List only existed because crew shared their details to be found, and Gamut carries that work forward. To keep the list useful, some Hue List entries have been brought across showing professional details only: name, role, department and home city. Phone numbers, email addresses and private notes are never shown.

You stay in control of your listing. You can:

  • Claim it — sign up with the same name and phone number, then bring your role, credits and photo up to date. Nothing goes live until it has been reviewed.
  • Correct it — tell us what is wrong and we’ll fix it.
  • Have it removed — no account needed and no reason required.

To correct or remove a listing, use the “Request correction or removal” link on the profile, or see the privacy and corrections section of our contact page. Requests are reviewed by hand, so they aren’t instant. We’ll ask for a simple check that the request comes from you or your agent, so no one can remove someone else’s listing.

On merit

Craft, merit and standards

Merit means seeing the whole field. You can only hire the best person for the job if you’re looking at everyone who can do it.

Craft, not categories. Profiles lead with what matters on set — roles, credits, guild and society membership, kit and representation. No one is featured, ranked or showcased; every listing stands on equal footing.

Hired on industry terms. Productions book crew directly or through their agents. Gamut never sets or guarantees rates or contract terms — crew and productions agree those between themselves, and members can use the private rate guidance in their Crew Desk. This isn’t a scheme or a placement programme — it’s working professionals, open for work.

The Founder

Joel Honeywell

Director of Photography

Gamut is founded and run by Joel Honeywell, a director of photography, who started the original list after years of noticing the same networks decide who got hired — and who never even got asked. He built the database to level the field, so that access to skilled crew would no longer depend just on those networks.

The platform stays independent, free for crew to join, and free for productions to search.

How Gamut works

Crew create and maintain their own profiles, with new profiles and updates reviewed by Gamut before publication to ensure they meet our standards for presentation and completeness.

Gamut does not independently verify every credit listed.

Productions contact crew directly. We do not sit between you and the people you hire.

The full detail sits in our Terms & Conditions.
